What exactly is a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists specialize in YOU! They are doctors with special training in one of the dental specialties, recognized by the American Dental Association. They are highly trained in the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of patients with complex clinical conditions using biocompatible substitutes, including implants, to replace missing or deficient teeth and/or craniofacial tissues. Prosthodontics is one of only nine dental specialties recognized by the ADA (American Dental Association).

What does a Prosthodontist do?

Prosthodontists have special training and experience. They specialize in creating and inserting dentures, tooth implants, and other types of man made dental replacements such as crowns or bridges. Prosthodontists freely collaborate with other health care professionals to coordinate specific time proven scientific solutions to your dental needs.

What can a prosthodontist do for me?

Prosthodontists are highly trained in state-of-the-art techniques and procedures for treating diverse and complex dental conditions for restoring optimum function and esthetics. These include crowns, inlays, veneers, complete dentures, removable partial dentures, dental implants, TMJ-jaw joint problems, traumatic injuries to the mouth’s structures and/or teeth, snoring or sleep disorders and oral cancer reconstruction and continuing care and other cosmetic related procedures. Prostodontists can restore your whole mouth, or just one particular tooth. Whatever your needs, a prosthodontist can get you the high level care you deserve.

What is a crown?

When a tooth is cracked or decay is more extensive, and the newer bonded compostes canot be used to restore a tooth to function, a crown (cap) is may be the best treatment possible. With the newer materials available in the last few years, you can have a crown with the strength, beauty, translucency and feel of a natural tooth.

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a high tech layer of super strong porcelain that is bonded over the front of your teeth and becomes part of the tooth. Veneers are used to improve the shape and appearance of teeth,  to close gaps between teeth and to hide discolorations. In some cases, for optimal esthetics, more than one tooth may need veneers.b>

What is tooth whitening (bleaching)?

Tooth whitening is a process that lightens stained discolored and faded enamel and dentin. This is usually a safe procedure performed in the office in a few hours or in a few short weeks by the patient at home with materials provided by their prosthodontist. This is done at a modest cost and is a very conservative and non-invasive approach to creating a more appealing smile. Just about everyone benefits from a brighter smile.

What are complete (full) dentures?

Complete dentures are man made replacements when all of the natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or both are missing. Full dentures are placed on the soft (gum) tissue in the mouth over the bone ridge.

What is removable partial bridgework (partial dentures)?

Removable partial bridgework can be used in certain cases when there are still enough key natural teeth remaining in the mouth. Partial bridgework is removable by the patient, which makes cleaning the teeth and partial bridge easier.
The prosthetic teeth on partial bridgework can look very natural and are made from high impact dental materials. Partial dentures usually incorporate special attachments to help hold them in place. Removable partial dentures rest on the teeth and soft gum tissues for support. This usually allows the patient the opportunity to choose a variety of treatment options.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are artificial tooth roots made of specially coated titanium. They are placed into recesses in the bone beneath the gum tissues. Implants are like a virtual root onto which a crown or partial bridge can be attached. With a simple, safe and pain-free procedure, you can put your best face forward. Take years off of your smile,
Dental Implants can be used to support full dentures and prevent bone loss and facial aging. Although implants take longer to place and can be more expensive than some other options, implants can help denture patients in particular, have a more comfortable smile and more confident bite with hard foods.
